Supporting children’s progress within the Early Years Foundation Stage
As adults with the privilege of the responsibility for caring and supporting the development and learning of children, it is vital that we understand how each child is progressing on their individual journey.
The EYFS Individual Pupil Tracker, EYFS Goals, the “I can” Tracker and Observation sheet are tools to track children’s progress when engaging in physical activities.
Practitioners should use these to reflect on a child’s development with their parents, to celebrate a child’s fascinations and to encourage their self-initiated learning. These simple trackers should enable practitioners and parents to reflect on ways they can improve the learning environment and give children the opportunity to experience a wide variety of learning experiences that enable them to meet their developmental milestones.
The trackers should help identify the child’s strengths and any areas where the child’s progress is less than expected. If there are significant emerging concerns, or an identified special educational need or disability, practitioners should work in partnership with parents and the nursery manager and SENCO to develop a targeted plan to support the child’s future learning and development, this may involve other professionals.
We have created some easy to use EYFS trackers and assessment sheets for tracking pupil progress against the characteristics of learning and areas of development to help make the process as easy as possible.
